Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse By: Judy Schachner
Synopsis: This is a very comical children’s book that takes the reader on an adventure through Skippy’s wild imagination. He is sent to his room for a time-out, and his imagination takes him to a shack to meet up with his friends. I have seen this series of books be read to children of all ages, and they all seem to love it. The author integrates Spanish into some of the text and makes these books enjoyable read-alouds by adding claps and sounds into the words.
Text-to-World: This book can be related to the Spanish speaking world and certain issues that are going on in these certain places. This book and the Spanish language in it can be used as a mini-lesson to introduce the issues that might be discussed in these areas.
Diary of a Worm By: Doreen Cronin and Illustrated By: Harry Bliss
Synopsis: This book is about a personal diary of a worm. The worm is very similar to people except that he eats his homework. This book is great for lessons with dates (month and days of the year) or introducing diaries. It also uses dialogue bubbles which is a different way to write text that students can learn about.
Text-to-Text: Students can relate this book to other books about animals that they have read. They will learn a lot of information on worms through this worm’s diary and can compare it to other factual information they learn in other animal books.
A Bad Case of Stripes By: David Shannon
Synopsis: This children’s book has great illustrations. It is about a young girl who breaks out in stripes and how she’s embarrassed to go to school because she does not want her
classmates to make fun of her. This story can be used for teaching about bullying or respecting people for who they are.
