Leslie's Text Set for "Questioning"

What's it Like to Be a Fish?

By: Wendy Pfeffer

This book talks all about fish! It tells us where fish live and what kind of bodies they have. It also tells us why they are good swimmers. It compares how fish breathe compared to humans. You can learn about what fish eat and how their body temperature is different than humans. This is a good nonfiction book for lower primary grades.

This book would be great for the questioning strategies. You could use this when doing the "beyond the line questions in literature". Students could come up with a question that is not easily answered with 1 or 2 sentences about fish. They would gather the information from the book and what they already know and write about it.

Harry the Dirty Dog

By:Gene Zion

In this story a dog named Harry hates to take baths. One day when he hears the water running he buries his brush and runs away. He ran into town and became so dirty that he looked like a black colored dog, instead of white colored dog. When he returned home his family didn't recognize him. He dashed into the house with his brush and jumped into the bath tub. The children gave the "strange" dog a bath and then realized that it was their Harry!

This book would be great for questioning strategy. You could use the "Using Question Webs to Expand Thinking". An example would be "why do you think harry ran away?" The students could then fill the bubbles around the center with their ideas from the story and inferences.

The Seasons WINTER

by:Nuria Roca

This book starts out by asking a question that leads to the answer, winter. This book talks about winter weather, snow. It gives a lot of insights on what animals and humans do in the winter time. It pays special attention to celebrations such as Christmas and New Years. It also shows what children wear and eat during the winter. This book finishes with another question, what colors make you think about winter? The end of the book includes activities that are related to winter.

This book is also great for the questioning strategy. You could easily use the Question Web strategy with the center question being "what is winter like?" You could also use the strategy, Questioning leads to Inferential Thinking. Asking a question about winter to the whole class, the having them answer questions that help them deepen their thinking.
