Beliefs and Understandings Concepts

Beliefs and Understandings

Methods
Guided Reading -students are in small group instruction, based on similar reading levels, skills needed, kids read quietly while teacher monitors and guides reading experience, while teacher is working with small group, other students are in literacy centers.
Reading Workshop - Teacher teaches a minilesson ("literary gossip," management, skills), students engage in independent practice, teacher monitors through conferences with children, students share their work to get other opinions, to reteach and break into "kid speak."
Writer's Workshop - Teachers have a mini-lesson, students engage independent practice, teacher monitors through conferences with students, students share their work.
Working with Words (Phonics) - letters, sounds, combinations of letters and sounds, word walls, word activities (making words, tongue twisters, read my mind, brand name phonics, rhyming games, WORDO, big books - looking for patterns)

Concepts
Strategy Instruction
  • Connections and Background - schema (what you know about the world and how you act in it), connecting schema to text (T-S), Text to text (T-T), Text to world (T-W).
  • Questioning - Reading to answer questions, questioning the reading, how reading creates more questions.
  • Visualizing - text puts pictures in our mind, how to create them, how to change them.
  • Determining Importance - What is the most important piece of the text, what is second, etc.
  • Summarizing and Synthesizing - Paraphrasing, what is the text about?, merging ideas to create new schema.

Critical Literacy
Informational Texts
Fluency
Visual Literacy
Book Clubs / Groups
Literacy Centers - specialized places for specific activities, kids are working independently on specific skills in specific spaces of the room, tend to be kid-driven.
Technology - used where appropriate and in spaces that will help children learn literacy.

Assessment

Kidwatching / Observations
Writing Samples
6+1 Traits - a way to talk about and assess writing, it is not a curriculum, use this with writing samples and vocabulary in minilessons. Developed by Ruth Culham, Vicki Spandel.
Running Records
Retellings
Interviews

Thank you for posting this! I think it is a good resource for the beliefs and understandings paper, but also to prepare for interviews. I can see myself getting really nervous right before an interview and scared that I will forget what I am talking about. This is a good paper to look over to quickly remind us all the tools we have learned. I especially think so because there are ways to implement the strategies listed on there too. This will certainly help calm my fears before I talk to a principal.

For the Belief and Understanding Paper do we need to include all of the terms listed above or just the ones that we believe are the most useful to us?

I think this is a great way to put our thoughts and ideas together from the semester. There were a lot of vocabularly words learned, and I feel like this will help me to really remember what they are and to keep them in mind for the future. I do not think I can get 6-8 pages out of this, yet there is a lot of great information to include.

To answer your question Chloe, I think you only have to use the words that you want to. He even said before do not write your paper based on what he wants to hear, but what you learned and believe yourself. The reason I remember that is because he was saying that you may not use all of those strategies in your classroom or believe that they are useful, but I am guessing that we will most likely use a majority of them. I will most likely start fresh with this because my reading and writing cluster teacher was all about holistic learning and my paper is really geared towards that as opposed to a balanced literacy classroom, and now I really believe in the balanced approach more. Thanks for posting this, now I can be sure that my meanings for the words match what we said in class.

I agree with Jenna, I will probably start nearly completely fresh with my paper because my reading and writing cluster did not advocate a balanced literacy perspective. I am only going to use the terms that I think would make my classroom the most efficient in my viewpoint. I felt like when I went back to read through my old Beliefs and Understandings paper that my viewpoints on literacy in the classroom have changed very much since last year.

This post really helped me to organize my thoughts and understand the differences in all of these concepts. This will not only be helpful for our beliefs and understandings paper, but also for future reference. I definitely plan to refer to these ieas for my own future classroom as well as while going through the interview process.

I'm really glad you posted this resource! I am so thankful that you went over each strategy and explained them in detail. At the beginning of the semester, I was confused about each one and couldn't tell you the difference. Now that we have spent so much time learning and doing each one, it is much easier to understand. Thank you for spending so much time working with us to understand these strategies. I will start my beliefs and understandings fresh because all these new ideas are really grabbing my attention. My other papers aren't much in depth and pretty short. This resource really helped me figure out what I wanted to write about and why. Thanks again for doing this and all that we have gone over this semester!!!

I started looking over this list and comparing it to what I had with my last belief and understandings paper and I realized how much I have learned this year! I feel like my last reading methods course was a waste and I want to thank Nick for catching me up. I was really nervous about this paper but looking at the list I confidently can explain most if not all of those concepts and definitely know which ones I'll be using in my classroom! Thanks for posting!

It seems many people have realized just how much they learned this semester when writing their Beliefs and Understandings Paper. Looking back on my previous B+U papers is unbelievable, now obvious how little I understood strategies to teach reading at that time. Now I feel I could name atleast 10 methods of teaching reading on the top of my head, showing how crucial E341 is to my career and education!
